Fashion in Japan

I am facinated with how fashion trends start and how these fashion trends migrate to other countries.

I frequently read Fashion in Japan and wanted to share a few pictures with you from their “trend spotting” photographers.

Fashion varies greatly in Japan, based on the location (I guess it does as well in the US, but it’s not as pronounced as in Japan).

The is first set of pictures are from Shibuya. The style looks very ‘Western’ influenced, but these girls take the style just a touch further, don’t you think?

The next set of pictures are from Harajuku. I could probably never predict what will be ‘fashionable’ in Harajuku. Fashion changes rapidly and is completely unpredictable.

Interesting, isn’t it? If you have any other sites you like where you spot fashion in other cities, let me know.

Harajuku girls are my muse(s) – I adore them, think they are genius, and loathe Gwen for perverting their style. I like her otherwise, though.

    Check this one out: http://stilinberlin.blogspot.com

It was a great find when I was researching the article we just wrote on real estate investment in Berlin. In fact, Nylon just cited Berlin as one of the emerging fashion markets in a recent issue (along with the other obvious ones, NYC, Paris, etc.) MTV also just moved their corporate headquarters there.

And for the ultimate in Asian fashion: http://www.pingmag.jp

Last but not least – I have a couple of friends in LA who have been featured on this site: http://www.indiedesignerlabels.com

    Happy reading, girls (and boys).

GOOD SITES! Thanks for the tips. I can’t believe MTV moved their corporate headquarters to Berlin…how funny. I always think of NYC when I think of MTV.

AMEN on Gwen perverting/exploiting Harajuku girls style. The problem is, as soon as you think you catch on to something with their style *poof!* it changes! So as much as Gwen tries, she’ll alway only offer latent, Americanized versions of Harajuku style.

Yeah and at least a season too late, which as we all know is totally like, 3 years in fashion-time. Gawd.

I wonder where those gals get their inspiration from…

Check out Fruits (http://www.fruits-mg.com/), a monthly publication of what’s on the Japanese fashion scene.

There are also two Fruits books full of stunning photos of true Harajuku Girls (and guys!). You can find them on Amazon.
